Summer Student, Nursing (Year 2 or 3)

Misiway Milopemahtesewin Community Health Centre

Été / Étudiant • Timmins Région

Misiway is an Indigenous-led Primary Health Care Organization in Timmins, Ontario. Misiway, meaning “everyone” in Cree, reflects our commitment to inclusive, community-centred care. We support the whole person by bringing together people, culture, and services to ensure care for everyone.

Status: Full-Time, Seasonal (35 hours per week)
Salary: $19.50/hour

About This Role

Misiway serves a largely Indigenous population, including First Nations, Métis, and Inuit community members. Our clinic takes a wholistic approach to primary care, which means we look at the whole person across physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual dimensions of health. Culture is part of how we deliver care here, not a footnote to it.

You’ll work in a team that includes Registered Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physicians, Diabetes Education Program and Land-Based Program. For most nursing students, this is a different kind of clinical environment than a hospital. Smaller. More relational. Slower in some ways, and deeper in others.

You’ll finish the summer with direct experience in an Indigenous-led clinical setting, a reference from a practicing clinician, and a real understanding of how culture shapes health outcomes. That background tends to stand out in nursing school applications, graduate programs, and job interviews.

What You’ll Do

Work Directly with Clients

Your days will be shaped by what’s happening in the program and what your supervisor sees you’re ready for. In general, you can expect to:

•         Assist with patient intake, vital signs, and basic clinical assessments under RN supervision

•         Support clinic flow, including room preparation, specimen collection, and point-of-care testing

•         Observe and assist with chronic disease management appointments, including clients with diabetes, hypertension, and other complex conditions

•         Support health promotion activities and client education as directed

•         Help with basic documentation in Misiway’s Electronic Health Record, with training provided

You’ll work within your current scope of practice as a student nurse. Every clinical task is assigned and supervised by a registered clinician.

What We Are Looking For

•         Currently enrolled in year 2 or 3 of a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program at an accredited Ontario institution

•         Comfortable working in a community setting with a diverse patient population, including Indigenous clients and families

•         Good communicator, with the ability to listen carefully and take direction from supervising clinicians

•         Interested in primary care, community health, or Indigenous health as an area of practice

•         Reliable, curious, and open to working in an environment that may feel different from what you’re used to

Assets

•         Knowledge of or connection to Indigenous cultures, history, or communities in the region

•         Ability to speak Cree or Ojibway

•         Any previous exposure to community health, public health, or social determinants of health in your coursework or personal life

What Working Here Looks Like

Our clinic is quieter than a hospital. You’ll know the patients who come in regularly. You’ll see the same faces week to week, and you’ll start to understand their health in context, not just in the fifteen minutes they’re in the exam room.

You’ll also work alongside people who practice care differently than what most nursing programs prepare you for. Land-based health and cultural programming are part of how we support clients. That side of the work isn’t separate from the clinical side. It’s woven through it.

Our Commitment

Misiway is an equal opportunity employer.
We strongly encourage Indigenous applicants to apply and self-identify in their applications. We also welcome applications from people with disabilities. Accommodation is available throughout the recruitment process upon request.

A Vulnerable Sector Screening Police Check is required as a condition of hire.
