Purpose

 The Safety Specialist is responsible for promoting, coordinating and implementing programs to maintain high levels of safety through compliance to legislated regulations and company standards/procedures. As a resource to all workplace parties, the Safety Specialist promotes the Internal Responsibility System (IRS) and helps foster a strong, proactive safety culture.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the inherent programs i.e. 5 Pt. Safety System, Safety Meetings, etc.
  • Support development and reviewing job procedures .
  • Regularly audit or arrange for the audit of the elements of the health and safety system, and to suggest ways of improving them.
  • Regularly audit and inspect the operation for compliance with the Act, Regulations and company policies / procedures.
  • Advise workers, supervisors and management personnel on technical safety & health matters.

 
Safety Training

  •  Educate all levels of the organization about the IRS, and to actively promote it.
  • Audit the trainers in their duties and to ensure high quality and compliant training
  • Ensure that all Trainers have received training on the material that they are presenting, received a Train-the-Trainer course and familiar with the Act & Regulations pertinent to the job in which they are instructing
  • Ensure the site induction training programs are administered to all new employees, contractors and visitors.

 
Contractor and Change Management

  •  Support contractor safety orientation, oversight, and performance monitoring to ensure safety standards are met
  • Participate in Management of Change (MOC) reviews to assess safety impacts of equipment, process, or staffing changes
  • Assist in safety-by-design processes for infrastructure and operational changes

Data, Reporting and Communication

  • Develop and distributed safety performance reports using both leading and lagging indicators
  • Support the implementation and use of digital safety tools (eg, inspection apps, dashboards)
  • Communicate safety messages across shifts and departments in a clear and engaging manner
  • Participate in safety meetings, pre-start meetings and leadership tours to promote visibility


Training and Education

  • Minimum Grade 12 education; post-secondary diploma in Occupational Health & Safety or related field preferred
  • Minimum 3 year of safety experience in a mining or industrial setting.
  • A Valid Driver’s License
  • Strong understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act and Regulations for Mines & Mining Plants, surface and underground mine rescue training, WHMIS and Loss Control techniques.
  • Good understanding and working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, surface and underground mine rescue training, WHMIS and Loss Control techniques.

Working Conditions

  • Site-based role with presence in both surface, mill or underground environments
  • Must be capable of conducting inspections in physically demanding settings
  • Participation in emergency response activities and safety drills as required
