Job Title: Teacher
Location : Timmins
Pay: $45/hour

SUMMARY:
The Teacher, an educational support provider at Wakenagun Youth Healing Lodge is responsible to support Grade 6 and above students providing targeted instruction and tracking progress. It focuses on fostering academic growth, emotional well-being, and resilience, while collaborating with counselors, families, and staff. Experience with First Nation communities and a passion for students’ success are key skills that lead to success in the role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work in collaboration with Wakenagun Youth Healing Lodgeto provide educational support to Grade 6 and above students, fostering academic growth and personal development while encouraging personal growth and well-being.
  • Understand and support individualized education plans by assisting with unique learning needs and goals.
  • Provide one-on-one and small group teaching in key academic areas such as reading, writing, verbal communication, and mathematics, tailored to meet the varying levels of the students.
  • Conduct ongoing assessments to track student progress in academic achievement, mental health, and well-being, adjusting lesson plans as necessary.
  • Collaborate with counselors, therapists, families, and school staff to ensure a coordinated approach to each student's educational journey.
  • Create a supportive and non-judgmental atmosphere, empowering students to take risks in their learning while providing the necessary care and guidance helping students build confidence, resilience, and emotional stability.
  • Track and review homework and assignments to evaluate and enhance students’ understanding and skill development.
  • All other duties as assigned.

ACCOUNTABILITY:
The Teacher is supervised by and accountable to the Treatment Services Manager, with ultimate accountability to the Director of Treatment Services for overall performance.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Excellent critical thinking skills with the ability to answer difficult questions, solve conflicts.
  • Passionate about engaging students and making learning enjoyable.
  • Strong emotional and cultural Intelligence when handling sensitive issues, always maintaining strict confidentiality.
  • Experience and knowledge working with First Nation communities.
  • Ability to provide clear criminal records check with Vulnerable Sectors Screen upon hire.
  • Fluency in an Anishinaabe dialect (Cree, Ojibway or Oji-Cree) is preferred.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in teaching or relevant field.
  • 3+ years experience as a teacher.
  • Experience in working with Indigenous people, families, and communities
  • Must be in Good Standing with the Ontario College of Teachers
