Position Title: Afterhours Victim Responder
Positions Summary
This is a casual/relief position to provide support and coverage to the organization during evenings, weekends and holidays.
The role of the Afterhours Victim Responder (Responder) is to respond on-scene or over the phone at the request of police/emergency services for immediate crisis assistance in the event of a crime or tragic circumstance.
The Responder is supported by a staff member should additional support be required.
Position Salary: The Afterhours Victim Responder is paid a flat rate per shift on call.
Duties and Responsibilities
Crisis Response Management
· Provide on-call response coverage as needed based on the following shifts;
o Weekend coverage Friday at 4pm until Sunday at 4pm
· Respond to all request for crisis assistance/service from the police, and/or other emergency services; coordinate crisis response while liaising with police and/or emergency services.
· Answers calls from police, other emergency services and self-referring clients.
· Attend on-scene as requested.
· Provide crisis intervention, emotional support, practical assistance and referrals to clients.
· Maintain regular contact with the backup staff during the call.
· Debrief with the backstaff (if required) at the end of the call once the call has been completed.
· Consult with the staff if any unusual, difficult or emergency situation/circumstances arise that require immediate attention.
· Report all alleged child abuse cases that are suspected on scene immediately to the Children’s Aid Society and forwarded that information to the Office Staff.
· Report any suspected or confirmed Homicide incidents to the Backup Staff.
· Gather necessary information required to compete reports. Submit all reports following the call.
· Other duties as assigned.
Position Requirements
- Consent to a Criminal Background Check including a Vulnerable Person Check
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality (Oath of Confidentiality to be signed annually)
- Valid Driver’s License and access to a reliable vehicle; willingness to travel within the catchment area (Timmins and District)
- Degree or Diploma in the Social Services or related field or relevant experience
- Experience in social services and victim issues
- Completion of the Victim Services Crisis Responder volunteer training
- Knowledge of community resources
- Energetic individual who possesses the ability to deal with high stress and crisis incidents in a calm and soothing manner
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to maintain good working relationships with police, staff and other social services providers
- Excellent decision making, organizational and communication skills
- Conscientious in completing all necessary documentation
- Ability to provide non-judgmental, sensitive, emotionally safe services related to volunteers and victims
- High level of commitment and responsibility
